thermal neutron damage in boron carbide
B4C is the material that will be used as neutron absorber in the future ASTRID reactor. Here we want to study the damage produced by neutron capture on 10B to help modelling of B4C in reactor conditions. Preliminary tests on D16 evidenced that the transmission of a 10B depleted B4C sample slightly decreases for a ½ day neutron irradiation time, but without significant changes in the diffraction pattern. In this experiment we aim at performing a longer experiment in order to achieve a significant fraction of 10B transmuted in 7Li so that changes of the diffraction pattern could be observed. We especially would like to see the formation of small size clusters that should be visible at low Q.
