Title

Crystal structure of novel tantalum hydrides

Abstract

Novel tantalum hydrides hcp-TaH2.2 and A15-TaH1.23 were synthesized by exposing tantalum foil to a hydrogen atmosphere at a high pressure of 9GPa and elevated temperatures with subsequent quenching to liquid nitrogen temperature and recovery to ambient pressure. The produced samples were studied by X-ray diffraction and thermal desorption analysis. Being warmed in vacuum, A15-TaH1.23 released some hydrogen at -70C in a stepwise manner and transformed to A15-TaH1.05. Under the same conditions, hcp-TaH2.2 decomposed directly to the low-pressure orthorhombic TaH0.92 hydride. Despite our efforts to produce deuterated counterparts, we could make only orthorhombic TaD0.92. The samples of the hcp-TaH2.2, A15-TaH1.23, A15-TaH1.05, and orthorhombic TaH0.92 and TaD0.92 weighing about 200-500 mg each are prepared for transportation to ILL. We propose a neutron diffraction study of these 5 samples with the D20 instrument to determine hydrogen positions in their crystal structures. In a separate proposal No. 80472, we will ask for inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the same samples to be done with the IN1-Lagrange instrument.
