Title

Dynamics in polyelectrolyte solutions: the counterion effect

Abstract

The presence of charge in polyelectrolyte solutions gives rise to a wealth of new phenomena, stemming from the interaction of charges along the backbone and the total or partial dissociation of counterions from the PE backbone. The proposed experiment is concerned with counterion specific effects and their possible consequence on the relaxation measured in the vicinity of the polyelectrolyte peak. We concentrate on ionenes, a family of water-soluble cationic polyelectrolytes little known in the scattering community. We have recently observed a striking counterion effect which consists in the disappearance of the polyelectrolyte peak for ionenes with Br- counterions beyond a certain monomer concentration (1 molar), while the peak remains in the case F- counterion. This is interpreted as a constriction of the counterion atmosphere in the case of Br-, which should have an influence on the chain mobility and flexibility. We wish to measure and compare the relaxation times (and the effective diffusion coefficients) around the observed polyelectrolyte peak in the two counterion cases and interpret them in view of theoretical predictions.
