Title

Ion extraction at liquid/liquid interfaces

Abstract

We have started recently a programme involving the use of neutron reflectivity at water/oil interfaces to study the ion extraction mechanism from the aqueous phase to the oil phase by means of an extractant molecule. We plan to continue this study by varying the concentration of extractant molecules around the critical aggregation concentration, because in previous neutron and synchrotron radiation measurements we observed drastic changes for the rate of transfer of ionic species around the CAC and on the fluctuations of the surface tension during the out of equilibrium processes. A large amount of work and tests have been necessary to develop a suitable neutron cell that we have tested in 2013 at ILL and in 2014 at J-PARC, ISIS and ILL. We have now an optimised system that will allow us to enhance the efficiency of the experiment thanks to the unique capability of FIGARO to strike the interface from both sides with a reasonable q-range and flux.
